Christian, Are You Saved?

MATTHEW 7:13, 21-23, 29

Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen me, you have believed: blessed are those who have not seen , and yet have believed.” Jn 20:29

“[Jesus] is speaking of faith that is satisfied with what God provides and is therefore not yearning for visions, miracles, esoteric experiences or various forms of success as evidence of God’s favour.

“More than that, He is saying that a faith without these things is not inferior to but actually superior to a faith based upon these.” BOICE

“the mere performance of spectacular deeds (even supernatural ones) is not necessarily divine authentication (Deut 13:1-5; 2 Thess 2:8-12; Matt 24:24).”HOMER KENT, JR.

..and later the other virgins also came, saying, “Lord, Lord, open up for us.” But He answered and said, “Truly I say to you, I do not know you.” Matt 25:11

..without a wedding garment. Matt 22:11-13

…..shut doors..(vs 25) Lk 13:22-30 (context: Jews who believe their right of passage by association; so with many Christians too?)

“We are back to a major error that we have already dealt with in slightly different form: seeing God, in effect, as little more than a means to self-fulfilment and viewing all that He has done, including the cross of Christ, primarily from the selfish perspective of what we get out of it. It is the same old rebellion, but now justified by theories of psychology.” DAVE HUNT

“Self is our greatest curse. But, praise God, Christ came to redeem us from self….. And there you have the reason why many people pray for the power of the Holy Ghost, and they get something, but oh, so little! Because they prayed for power, for work, and power for blessing, but they have not prayed for power for full deliverance from self.” ANDREW MURRAY

-a personal relationship with Christ and death to self is the root of the matter of salvation. If you have any other motive, other than coming to Christ through the need of mercy and trusting His blood to cover your condition and thus releasing you to live your entire life to the lordship of Christ, you may not be truly saved.

-if you have just added Christ to improve your lot in life you may not be truly saved. There will come a time when the door will be shut, and this time may be closer than we think. When that door is shut tight, what side of the door will you be on? Will that day be as the day of Esau? ..who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears. Heb 12:16b, 17

“[The writer of Hebrews] warned the readers not to yield to transitory pressures and forfeit their inheritances. If some did, they would ultimately regret the foolish step and might find their inheritance privileges irrevocably lost as were Esau’s.” ZANE HODGES

“psychology attempts to explain scientifically and thereby provide an understanding of human behaviour under the amoral assumption that ignorance and not sin is the problem. If we only understood, then we could change our behaviour to conform to our understanding.

“This is a delusion that denies the root of the problem – man’s sin nature and rebellion against God. A moral choice has been made that must be repented of before God. God alone can give cleansing for sin. More than that, He alone can give the power to live a new life through Christ’s indwelling Spirit. All of the understanding in the world will not provide the power to change one’s behaviour: A new moral choice is demanded. And if the choice is made without recognizing one’s obligation to God and without accepting His remedy, then the result will either be failure to make lasting change, or, what is even worse, outward success that produces self-righteousness.” DAVE HUNT

are you a sinner or a saint?

Rev 14:12

12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. (KJV)

Are you really saved?

2 Cor 13:5

5 Test yourselves {to see} if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you– unless indeed you fail the test? (NAS)

-do you see yourself as God’s creation unto good works?
Eph 2:10

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (KJV)

-Do you feel obligation to submit to the Lordship of God and his purpose for you in life? Or do you just see Him as a source for self-fulfilment?

-do you formula think? Matt 6:7 ..much prayers

-do you think with all your works and busyness that your acceptable God? Do you think God gives blessings based on your good behaviour? Do you think we earn blessings?

-do you think yourself better for having religion?
Luke 18:10-14

10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

-do you see yourself as better than others who do not have your commitment to God or hold to your moral ethics?

-are you bitter at your lot in life? Heb 12:15..root of bitterness

-do you feel hard done by in life? Do you feel you deserve God’s sympathy?

“Does it not seem odd, however, that the early Christians thrived under rejection and triumphed over severe persecution, whereas todays Christians are given months and sometimes years of counselling to overcome rejection and abuse?” HUNT

“How many of us would serve Him if He offered nothing but Himself? No healing, no success, no prosperity, no worldly blessing, no miracles, signs or wonders?

“What if – once again we had to take the spoiling of our goods?

“What if – instead of painless living, we suffered cruel mockings, stoning, bloodshed, being sawn asunder?

“what if – instead of beautiful homes and cars, we had to wander about in deserts in sheepskins, hiding in dens and caves?

“What if – instead of prosperity, we were destitute, afflicted, and tormented? And the only better thing provided for us was Christ?” DAVE WILKERSON (HEB 11)

do you desire to know God in the midst of trials?
1 John 2:19

19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

Matt 13:20-21

20 But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;

21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.

James 1:2-4 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

-do you have a deep desire to please God out of a thankful heart?

Col 3:14-15

14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

-do you struggle against sin in your life?
Gal 5:17-18

17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.

18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. (NIV)

Rom 8:5-7

5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

The unsaved may be fearful of the consequences of his sin and may be sorrowful when he is caught, but the regenerated, when he sins is not pleased with himself when he does, and struggles to be free from its power. The unsaved wishes to be free from consequences of his sinful desires; the saved wishes to be free from the urge to sin.

For the truly saved, the one who is created new by the Holy Spirit upon conversion, sin is abnormal and unnatural. Therefore the person who openly sins against Scripture without conviction cannot be of God because he goes against the new self which has divinely motivated desires for righteousness. (2 Cor 5:17; 1 Jn 3:4-9).

We who are saved do not like the trials that come our way. But we do draw toward God in the midst of them. We understand God wishes to produce in us the very attitudes of Christ through them. The world cannot even hope to understand this faith. Ro 8:16-18

-do you find God’s commandments a burden, as restrictions upon your happiness?

-His commandments are not burdensome to the Christian

I Jn 5:3-5

3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?(KJV)

I Jn 2:5

5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. (KJV)

I Jn 4:16

16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. (KJV)

I Jn 4:18-19

18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

19 We love him, because he first loved us.(KJV)

Sin’s objection to them is the burden, sin’s motivation is contrary to the law of righteousness; and giving sacrificial love is tiring.

If you have no assurance, there may be a chance you are not saved. What does your faith rest in, your ability, and your performance? Many do not feel totally forgiven by God. Do you feel fully forgiven by God? If you don’t, it must be one of three reasons: 1. Unbelief in the total cleansing Christ accomplished for you at the cross; you may not be a child of God through faith. 2. The unconfessed conscious knowledge of sin in your life or bondage to the continual practice of sin. 3. Or you do not feel forgiven because you are receiving the discipline of the Lord because of unforgiveness in your life toward others.

Our faith must rest in God’s gift to us in Christ. It’s His ability that keeps us as we trust in His Faithfulness to us through Christ’s blood.
